Short bio: Harlan E. Spence is Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and Director of the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space at the University of New Hampshire where he leads a research group that studies the physics of cosmic plasmas, from the Sun's corona to interplanetary space and all the way to Earth's upper atmosphere, using experimental and modeling techniques. He is principal investigator on three major NASA flight projects: the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the Effects of Radiation on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbit; the Energetic Particle, Composition, and Thermal Plasma Suite of the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP-ECT) on Van Allen Probes; and, the HelioSwarm MIDEX mission concept currently in Phase A.
